hook

the next movie i chose to watch is steven spielberg's 1991 film, "hook." to me, hook is one of those movies that brings you back to your childhood memories. the score, the story, and the experience as a whole is always powerful to me. i often wonder why so many of the movies i enjoy receive poor reviews from critics. it is as if they want every film to be some earth-shatteringly unique, useful, fresh movie. is it really that terrible to stick with something that may have been done, but is known to have a certain effect on people? after all, the movie was the fourth-highest grossing worldwide in 1991, so something must have been good about it. anyways, the environments in the movie are solid. the acting, minus julia roberts, is pretty decent. the soundtrack is powerful. it does a good job of touching the emotions of those who grew up with it. that's the formula for success in my book.

  1. I'm glad to see you looking at films and developing your own opinions based upon criteria that you see as important as opposed to just looking at the viewpoint of critics. It's worthwhile to read critical reviews, but it's okay to disagree with them. I'd be careful about basing the worth of film on its box office numbers, because many good films do poorly at the time of their release, while plenty of trash makes a boatload. Your reasoning for the merit of Hook is sound. Keep watching!
